LAKE LOUISE, ALBERTA

Population:
Approximately 1,000

The Village of Lake Louise is located 55 km. West of Banff. It is a small community surrounded by some of the most scenic mountain landscapes in Banff National Park. Here you will find Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks, Lake Agnes, Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House, and many other renown and simply spectacular points of interest. Like Banff, the railroad has a history here. It also has a Chateau located on the shores of beautiful Lake Louise. A small "Sampson Mall" provides limited shopping. The Post Hotel serves hardy meals for those looking for something special. We recommend spending a day exploring the area and hope you will also find time to venture over the Great Divide to British Columbia and Yoho National Park to complete a fabulous day of sightseeing.

Activity - Ice Explorer

Ice Explorer Ride

Everyone should take a day to explore the Icefields Parkway, the highway that connects Jasper and Lake Louise. This is where you will discover the Athabasca Glacier. Largest of all icefields in the Canadian Rockies, the Columbia Icefield is guarded by 11 of the Rockies' 22 highest peaks. Here, perennial snow accumulates and turns to ice which flows to feed six major outlet glaciers, three of Canada's largest rivers and eventually three oceans. The ice straddles the Continental Divide, two provinces and two national parks. The ice is 365 meters (1,200 feet) thick - about the height of the Empire State Building.

You will travel onto the glacier in a specially designed "Ice Explorer" to a turnaround point atop 333 meters of ice. Be sure to bring a sweater or light jacket - it may snow at anytime during your 1.5 hour Ice Explorer ride! Tours depart every 15 to 30 minutes throughout the day.
