The community of Banff, Alberta is nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies in Banff National Park. A 90 minute drive from Calgary, the townsite is situated beautifully at the confluence of the Bow & Spray Rivers.

It was the discovery of thermal Hot Springs on Sulphur Mountain that led to the creation of Canada's first National Park back in 1885. Soon after the Banff Springs Hotel was built to promote use of Canada's newly completed transcontinental rail service. These historic monuments marked the beginning of the tourist based economy of the area seen today and Banff continues to draw visitors from around the world.

In Banff, there is a wonderful selection of fine hotels and resorts. The location of these accommodation within a National Park makes the community very special. Everyone visiting the area will want to explore the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, a 100 year old castle surrounded by a spectacular natural wilderness setting.

Although the Banff townsite can be busy, there are panoramic views in every direction. By walking only a few blocks one will discover splendid mountain paths, interpretive displays and beautiful historic Banff homes. The Banff Centre, located on Tunnel Mountain, gives local residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy year round cultural events including music, dance, opera and the very popular Banff Mountain Film Festival.

Mountain Park Travel Canada's office is located here and you are welcome to visit us at 220 Bear Street in the Bear Street Mall, Suite 201.

Local Recommendation

We suggest you spend at least one day exploring Banff and the surrounding area. Take half the day to visit many of the scenic viewpoints and historical sites close to the townsite. Then make time to stroll along Banff Avenue where local shops, museums, galleries and restaurants welcome visitors from around the world. Those looking for a nature walk will enjoy our new walking path that follows the Bow River between Bow Falls and the town of Banff.
